2016 VC Investment Predictions

Which startup sectors will see the most VC investment in 2016? Using CrunchBase data to analyze seed and Series A deals by sector since 2010, Tomasz Tunguz of Redpoint predicts that big data, education, marketplaces, and SaaS will see strong investment activity in 2016, while advertising, games, and social media have already peaked.

While it’s not included in Tunguz’s analysis, biotech is having a big day today: five biotech startups just revealed plans to go public. Among them are SF-based gene therapy startup Audentes Therapeutics (backed by $138M in funding from T. Rowe Price, Venrock and others) and two-year-old genomic editing tech company Editas Medicine, which previously raised $120M from investors including Flagship Ventures and Polaris Partners.

As we launch into the New Year, Brad Feld has some advice for founders: control your destiny. What this means depends on the stage, size and investor base of your startup, but it’s especially important to be in control given the shaky near-term future of the VC sector, according to some.
