In this CommNexus Healthcare Comm. SIG event, the panelists will discuss the business and technical innovations that they are implementing in the healthcare market.  While presently outstandingly efficient companies, they are about to embark on the use of new business practices and leading edge technologies, including; mini lasers that can ‘sniff’ a person’s breath and identify different cancers (as an example; liver cancer, etc.) during wellness tests and newly defined research methods. They will also discuss mergers and investment in healthcare and which types of companies are being targeted, plus the investment criterion.

David Wellis Ph.D.
Chief Executive Officer, San Diego Blood Bank
David become the CEO of San Diego Blood Bank in July 2013.  The SDBB provides the Southern California region’s hospitals with a wide range of blood banking services, including its Cell Therapy Program which processes and stores cord blood, facilitating lifesaving stem cell transplants to patients worldwide.  Dr. Wellis joined the SDBB following his tenure as President of San Diego-based BioAtla, LLC, a protein therapeutics service provider. Previously, Dr. Wellis headed Product Marketing at Illumina, Inc., one of the world’s largest developers and marketers of genomic research and clinical analysis instruments. He was also previously president and CEO of San Diego-based GenVault Corporation. The company was one of the world’s leaders in bio-sample transport and banking, and was instrumental in helping medical research, agriculture, and other fields advance genomic analysis and sample preservation. Dr. Wellis began his commercial career at Axon Instruments, Inc., that developed novel instrumentation for biomedical research, diagnostic and applied markets.

Founded in January 2005 Daylight Solutions is the world leader in Quantum Cascade Laser (QCL) based molecular detection and imaging systems. The company pioneered the commercialization of QCLs by combining QC gain media with our patented External Cavity Quantum Cascade Laser (ECqcL™) technology. The result was a robust, broadly tunable or fixed wavelength mid-infrared (mid-IR) laser source.  Serving applications in Life Sciences, Oil & Gas and a number of other important markets.    In 2010, Daylight Solutions created Daylight Defense as a wholly owned subsidiary. Prior to Daylight, Sam was a Solutions Architect at Applied Micro Circuits Corp, Applications Physicist IV at Superconducting Super Collider, Optical Engineer in Ophthalmology at Techna Vision and Aviation Fire Control Technician, Petty Officer, U. S. Navy on board USS Enterprise.
