Driving Behavior:
What Does Your Smart Phone Know and Who Is It Telling?

There are a growing number of mobile applications that are tracking driver behavior  as well as restricting texting, calling, and using a mobile device while driving.  Distracted driving is the highest cause of car accidents with the number one distraction being mobile device use in a car.  41 states now ban texting while driving. People under the age of 20 are involved in more fatal crashes due to distractions than any other age group. There have been several large settlements against companies that hold them liable for car accident damages their employee were in while using their mobile device.Topics discussed will include:

  • Differences between consumer and enterprise-grade apps
  • Differences between standalone software app and software app combined with hardware such as ODBII device
  • How GPS and accelerometer sensors are used to provide data for these applications

Stan Van Meter
Founder & President, United Efficiency Group, Innovator, tXtBlocker, AT&T DriveMode and scan4beer
Stan Van Meter is the founder and president of United Efficiency Group, and the innovator behind mobile solutions tXtBlocker, AT&T DriveMode, and scan4beer which all rely on location based services to get the job done. As part of his work in the mobile space, Van Meter has developed LBS algorithms to predict when a teen is driving to prevent distractions behind the wheel to figuring out where the beverage cart should meet a thirsty golfer on a golf course. Stan has more than fifteen years of engineering and leadership experience and is a graduate of the University of Florida.  Stan started his career as a Conservation Engineer with a small Florida Utility where he gained a deep appreciation for the environment.  Prior to  forming United Efficiency, Stan spent the majority of his career developing and deploying post 9-11 advanced aviation security solutions at our nation’s top airports.

Olen Vanderleeden
VP Sales and Business Development, Aegis Mobility
Olen is VP, Sales and Business Development at Aegis and leads the team responsible for strategic channel and account relationships. Mr. Vanderleeden has over 17 years of sales, strategic business development, product management and research experience in high technology markets. Previously, Olen was Director of Business Development with Energizer where he led the pursuit of strategic new initiatives worldwide related to portable power for mobile devices. Mr.Vanderleeden also led strategic business development programs with Research in Motion (RIM) related to next-generation handset applications and has built extensive relationships with the world’s leading companies in the mobile device ecosystem. Prior to RIM, Olen led business development for Angstrom Power for 6 years and built strategic relationships with all major mobile device companies worldwide. Olen has a very strong technology background including almost 9 years with Ballard Power as a research manager. Mr. Vanderleeden holds a B.Eng., Mechanical Engineering from the University of Victoria and an MBA from Simon Fraser University.

Kevin Coppolino
VP of Corporate Development, Cellcontrol
As vice president of corporate development, Kevin Coppolino is responsible for developing and executing strategies that guide the company’s aggressive growth in both the B2B and B2C sectors. In addition, as part of the executive team Kevin assists in directing Cellcontrol’s vision and mission through managing corporate strategy and marketing efforts. With more than 20 years of experience in emerging and early-stage mobile solutions Kevin has extensive knowledge in solution selling, product development and sales. He has worked with global industry leaders in distracted driving solutions, automotive Human Machine Interfaces (HMI), User Based Insurance (UBI), fleet telematics, mobile apps, mobile data collection and 802.11 Wi-Fi network space. Kevin is a graduate of the University of Central Florida with a Bachelor of Advertising & Public Relations degree.

Lenny Grokop
Co-Founder, Zenhavior
Lenny Grokop is co-founder and president of Zenhavior, a smartphone platform that facilitates effortless monitoring of driving behavior through low-power mobile sensing. He focuses on bringing state-of-the-art machine learning and signal processing techniques to bear on the challenging problem of extracting accurate behavioral data from a smartphone without draining its battery. Prior to Zenhavior Lenny worked at Qualcomm Research we he lead the development of statistical algorithms for the first generation of mass-scale embedded context-aware computing. He has ten years of engineering research and product development experience. Lenny holds M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences from the University of California, Berkeley. He has published numerous peer reviewed research articles and holds 31 US patents.

Lead Product Marketing Manager, Enterprise- Mobile Resource Management Solutions, AT&T Advanced Mobility Solutions
Maureen Backe brings a fresh understanding of the complexities of LBS with experience at numerous technology companies — content provider, wireless operators, mobile broadband OEM, and software company. She is an accomplished marketing executive with expertise in a broad range of product marketing, business development, and partner and developer relations roles. At AT&T she is responsible for strategy & product marketing for enterprise driving while distracted solutions in the MRM vertical.Prior she was with the leading provider of location and navigation services, TomTom,  and managed Developer Alliances globally in the licensing business unit. Maureen evangelized map offerings within the LBS Ecosystem to key partners and developers. She doubled the membership in the developer portal and expanded the LBS Innovator Series globally, programs that awarded close to $1 million in cash and prizes to innovative location-enhanced applications. Maureen also initiated and led successful marketing programs with strategic developer communities such as AT&T, Motorola, Qualcomm, and BlackBerry. In addition to AT&T, she has worked at TomTom, SS8 Networks, Leap Wireless, and Novatel Wireless. She also has designed and instructed numerous Internet technology classes at UCLA Extension through its Engineering and IT department. Maureen was awarded a fellowship to University of Southern California where she received her MSEE specializing in data communications and multimedia. She also holds an MBA from Drexel University and Bachelor of Engineering from Villanova University.
