When getting ready to scale the size of your workforce there are many things to consider, one of the large factors being HR Management. In this session you will learn how to maximize your human resources, the type of workforce management model you want to build, and the options that need to be in place to scale your business. Join us for this interactive session with HR professionals on June 1st as we offer a framework for the discussion that you need to be having to find out what is best for your organization. Where are you in terms of your business plan and what do you need to do to achieve it? What are the resources to make it happen, both internally and externally?

Madonna Bentz
VP Operations, Solekai Systems

Madonna Bentz is a member of the executive team for Solekai Systems with responsibilities for directing Operations, Human Resources and IT. Solekai specializes in design, development, integration, and test of Digital Media, Smart Grid, and Connected Health Software for valued clients.

Prior to joining Solekai in 2004, Madonna was one of the founders of JABRA, the market leader in headsets for mobile phones. Madonna was part of the management team that successfully negotiated the sale of JABRA to GN Netcom in 2002.

Madonna received her education from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, UCSD Extension for Human Resources, and UCSD Rady School of Business.  She is a versatile business executive with over 25 years of experience managing small technologies companies.

Madonna has served as a Committee Co-Chair for EvoNexus HR SIG (Special Interest Group) formerly CommNexus, since 2007. She has been an active member of SHaRE in San Diego (a Senior HR Executive group) for over 10 years. She was previously Chair for the HR Roundtable, AeA San Diego Council.

As a human resource professional and consultant, Karen Kramer Horning has worked with companies from a variety of industries at all stages of their development. Also an educator, Karen teaches in the Business Management and HR certificate programs at UCSD Extension, serving early career HR professionals, students in career transition, and international business students.  Karen is certified by the Human Resources Certification Institute as a Senior Professional in Human Resources (SPHR). She has earned a BA in Sociology at the University of California, San Diego, an MBA at San Diego State University, and a PhD in Leadership Studies from the University of San Diego.

Stephen Smith

Steve Smith has held executive and C-level positions in Finance and Operations across a number of private and public companies including MicroPower Technologies (low-power, wireless video – CFO and Head of Operations), ImpediMed Ltd (medical device – VP Corporate Development), XiTRON Technologies, Inc. (test & measurement/medical device – President), and Applied Micro (telecom semiconductor – AMCC  – SVP and CFO).  Steve has been intimately involved in multiple early-stage and public funding initiatives, and has lead a number of M&A transactions, ranging from the low $Ms to $4.5B.

Steve received his education from Arizona State University and California International Business University. He currently sits on the Board of Niels Brock/CIBU and the Business Executives Council. Previous board and advisory roles include Entridia Communications, Toussaint Academy and Classy Inc.

Shannon Conway
Senior Sales and Business Consultant, TriNet 

Shannon Conway is a senior consultant at TriNet (NYSE: TNET). For the past 9 years, she has worked with Life Science and Technology companies in San Diego to help them maximize their human capital investment. In her role, Shannon works with C level executives to help them understand their HR options and presents the value of outsourcing HR administration and a strategic HR team through a partnership with TriNet. Shannon works diligently to identify key business needs and has a good working knowledge of HR software and technology, SaaS, Payroll, employee benefits and Talent Management. Her clients range from emerging growth companies to midmarket companies.

 Shannon also serves the San Diego innovation economy. She is currently a Board Member of San Diego Venture Group, an Advisory Board Member for SDSU Zahn Innovation Platform and an Advisory Board Member for CyberTech.

Nate Natzke is a senior employee benefits consultant with Barney & Barney, a Marsh & McLennan Agency LLC company. Nate joined the firm in 2013, bringing a decade of experience to the company’s Technology & Life Sciences Practice. In his role, he is responsible for customizing sustainable benefits programs for clients ranging from technology startups to large multinational organizations.  Nate advocates on behalf of his clients, addressing the distinctive needs of each. His clients benefit from his expertise in consumer driven healthcare strategies, robust health management, and wellness initiatives.

Prior to joining Barney & Barney, Nate worked at Gallagher Benefit Services for ten years where he held leadership positions in management, sales, and marketing in the employee benefits practice.

Nate is a member of several advisory councils, representing his clients’ interests with insurance companies and service providers.  Nate graduated from Devry in 1997, completing a BA in computer information systems.  He lives with his wife and three children in Aliso Viejo, CA.
