Next Generation Video: Expanding and Unifying the Multi-Screen World

March 20, 2013

The Digital Media SIG Presents…

Everyone is familiar with Moore’s Law which states that semiconductor processors double in performance every couple of years.  In the video coding area, a derivative of Moore’s Law has emerged. MPEG-1 and MPEG-2 are vintage early 90’s, while MPEG-4 AVC (H.264) was finalized in 2003. And now with the MPEG/ITU-T High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) standard and Google’s VP9, both being finalized in 2013, video compression efficiency appears to be doubling roughly every 10 years. In order to fill up all the new mobile SmartPhone and tablet screens, as well as eventually moving us into the spectacular world of 4K and 8K “Ultra HDTV,” every bit of this efficiency will be needed.

How do video engineers continue to dramatically improve video compression technology? What will be the market adoption curve for content and service providers to leverage these new techniques? How will 3D, Scalable Video and Ultra HDTV be enabled? What are some of the other important applications these new standards will give rise to?

Come join our experts as we discuss these important questions and many others.

PANELISTS:
Walt Husak
Director of Image Technologies, Dolby Labs, Inc.
Walt Husak is the Director of Image Technologies at Dolby Labs, Inc. He began his television career at the Advanced Television Test Center (ATTC) in 1990 carrying out video objective measurements and RF multipath testing of HDTV systems proposed for the ATSC standard. Joining Dolby in 2000, Walt has spent his early years studying and reporting on advanced compression systems for Digital Cinema, Digital Television, and Blu-ray. He has managed or executed visual quality tests for DCI, ATSC, Dolby, and MPEG. He is now a member of the CTO’s office focusing his efforts on 3D for Digital Cinema and Digital Television. Walt has authored numerous articles and papers for a number of major industry publications. Walt is an active member of SMPTE, MPEG, JPEG, ITU-R, and SPIE.  He currently chairs the SMPTE Frame Packing AHG and the MPEG Frame Compatible (MFC) AHG.
