Please join us for a  rare, joint meeting between the San Diego Chapter of the Licensing Executive Society and the Intellectual Property Special Interest Group of CommNexus to hear our panel of experts explain how this important interaction between manufacturers and technology developers works.  A licensing executive from Qualcomm, a former Kyocera licensing executive and the Chief Patent Counsel from Entropic Communications will present the legal and business issues around this little understood, but controversial, potential consequence of the patent licensing system. They will offer perspectives from both large and smaller players as well as what to expect in the future.

Eric Reifschneider
SVP and General Manager, Qualcomm Technology Licensing (QTL)
Eric Reifschneider serves as senior vice president and general manager of Qualcomm Technology Licensing (QTL) where he is responsible for managing the day-to-day operations and providing oversight and strategic direction to QTL’s Business Development, Legal, Finance, Market Analysis, Contract Compliance, and Audit organizations. He also plays a leading role in negotiating Qualcomm’s significant licensing deals and driving continued growth in QTL’s existing and future licensing programs.

Before joining Qualcomm, Reifschneider was a partner in the Palo Alto, California office of an international law firm, where he chaired the global technology and intellectual property group. Earlier in his career, Reifschneider was the head of the technology transactions group of a major Silicon Valley-based law firm. Reifschneider holds a Juris Doctor from Harvard Law School, where he graduated magna cum laude and served as Executive Editor of the Harvard Law Review, and bachelor of science degrees in physics and mathematics from M.I.T., where he graduated first in his class and was named the top male scholar-athlete in his senior class. He has served on the board of directors of the M.I.T. Club of Northern California and was the director of the Club’s semiconductor entrepreneurship program.

Bruce Greenhaus
VP, Chief Patent Counsel, Entropic Communications, Inc.
Bruce is an adjunct professor with Thomas Jefferson School of Law and has taught patent law classes on Claim Drafting, Litigation, and Claim Interpretation.  Bruce is a co-chair of the CommNexus Intellectual Property Special Interest Group (IP SIG) and a member of the San Diego Intellectual Property Law Association (SDIPLA).  He is also a past president of the SDIPLA.  He spent five years on the Board of the SDIPLA.  In addition to serving as President, he also served as the Vice President, the Secretary, and the Treasurer, performing each position for one year. He was formerly with Qualcomm.  He worked with Qualcomm for 10 years, the last 5 as Vice President, Patent Counsel.  He has been practicing patent law in San Diego since 1991 as an associate with the law firm of Spensley Horn Jubas & Lubitz and in 1995, with the firm of Baker, Maxham, Jester, & Meador. His career experience also includes working as an electrical engineer.  Bruce graduated from the State University of New York at Stony Brook in 1983 with a Bachelor of Electrical Engineering degree. During his senior year he worked full time designing circuits for detection of failures and redundancy switching in satellite earth station equipment.  After graduating, he spent another six years designing phase lock loops and filters for receivers, synthesizers, aircraft transponders, secondary radar, and equipment used to receive and transmit radio frequency signals between satellites and satellite earth stations.  In his last engineering job, he was project engineer for Satellite Transmission Systems, a subsidiary of California Microwave, responsible for leading an engineering team that designed and installed one of the largest satellite earth stations in Europe (London Teleport II).

Bruce subsequently attended Hofstra University School of Law while working as a consultant for Satellite Transmission Systems.  During law school, Bruce was an author for, and Editor of, the Hofstra Property Law Journal.  He authored an article that was cited by “Chism on Patents” (the leading treatise on patent law).  He was also awarded the “Gina Maria Escarce Memorial Award” for “contributing to the understanding of complex legal issues”.  Bruce served as a board member on the board of directors for the San Diego Volunteer Lawyer Program for 7 years, a program that is dedicated to assisting people gain access to the legal system, including battered women, children, elderly, immigrants, and others in need of legal services.  Bruce is currently on the Board of Directors for the Jewish National Fund. Bruce has been with Entropic since Dec. of 2007.

Don Timms

Don Timms has eight years experience as a Director for Software and IP Licensing in Kyocera’s mobile device businesses. Don created a financial IP licensing model for Kyocera’s handset business and has completed dozens of royalty analysis, licensing studies, prior art analysis, eDiscovery projects, patent litigations, negotiations and significant license agreements with large and small IP holders. Don currently provides consulting services on intellectual property, patent and technology issues to handset manufacturers. Don has 15 years experience in the mobile device business starting with Qualcomm Smartphones in the late 1990’s. Prior to this he worked for almost two decades in the management, development and manufacturing of multimedia computer systems and as an Aerospace engineer. Don specializes in intellectual property, licensing, program management, contracts and mobile application development. Don has a MS in Computer Science, a BA in Management Science and has several patented inventions.
