With one of the nation’s largest life science and wireless clusters, San Diego is poised to become the epicenter for a rapidly emerging and convergent industry – wireless healthcare.  Recognizing the potential to leverage the region’s remarkable resources, the West Wireless Health Institute was launched in 2009 with a $45 million commitment from the Gary and Mary West Foundation. Scripps Health and Qualcomm are collaborating closely as the Institute’s healthcare affiliate and technology sponsor.
The Institute was formed by Gary West, founder and chairman, along with Eric J. Topol, M.D., and Donald Jones.West, Topol and Jones will discuss their vision for the Institute – to move emerging wireless health technologies quickly into the hands of doctors, healthcare organizations and consumers, while ensuring that life-enhancing and lifesaving devices are safe, secure, and cost-effective.  By bringing together the best minds in science, technology, engineering and medicine, the West Wireless Health Institute aims to play a pivotal role in advancing wireless health research and education.

Gary West began his career in hospital administration and went on to build one of the largest telecommunications companies in the world. Along with his wife, Mary, West has founded numerous companies over the last four decades, including West Corporation in 1986. West Corporation became one of the largest customer relationship management providers in the world with more than 35,000 employees and $3.5 billion in annual sales. West and his wife formed the Gary and Mary West Foundation in 2006 to pursue their philanthropic interests, which include making high quality health care more affordable and universally available to everyone.

Eric J. Topol, M.D.
Chief Medical Officer, West Wireless Health Institute
Director, Scripps Translational Science Institute

In addition to his role as Chief Medical Officer for the West Wireless Health Institute, Eric J. Topol, M.D. is the Director of the Scripps Translational Science Institute, a National Institutes of Health funded program of the Clinical and Translational Science Award Consortium; Professor of Translational Genomics at The Scripps Research Institute; Chief Academic Officer and holder of the Gary and Mary West Chair of Innovative Medicine at Scripps Health, and a Senior Consultant cardiologist practitioner at Scripps Clinic. Topol, an innovator in wireless medicine, is also currently on the Board of Triage Wireless, a developer of complete vital sign monitoring using wireless technology.  Topol formerly chaired the Department of Cardiovascular Medicine at Cleveland Clinic for fifteen years, and founded the Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine.Donald Jones

In addition to his role as Chief Wireless Officer for the West Wireless Health Institute, Donald Jones serves as Vice President of Health and Life Sciences for Qualcomm Incorporated, a global leader in developing and delivering innovative digital wireless communications products and services. He is responsible for leading Qualcomm’s expansion of wireless technologies into the consumer health, healthcare and medical device markets. In addition, Jones has multiple patents and patent pending applications around wireless health solutions. Jones is on the Boards of the Alliance Healthcare Foundation, the American Telemedicine Association, and is the founding board member of the Wireless Life Science Alliance. He holds degrees in biology and bioengineering, and law and business.

MODERATOR:
Jeffrey Belk
Jeffrey Belk is a principal in ICT168 Capital, LLC, focused on developing and guiding global growth opportunities in the Information and Communication Technology space.  Formerly, Belk spent almost 14 years at Qualcomm, where prior to his departure in early 2008, he was SVP of strategy and market development.  Belk is on the board of Peregrine Semiconductor, and is an advisor/investor in numerous tech/wireless companies. From 2000 until 2006, Belk was Qualcomm’s SVP, global marketing, and in 1999-2000, was SVP & GM of Qualcomm Eudora Products. Prior to Qualcomm, Belk spent ten years in the PC industry, primarily with then San Diego based Proxima Corporation. Belk has a BA in Economics from UCSD, and an MBA from UCI.
