Term sheets do not need to be mysterious, intimidating or left entirely up to attorneys. They do not need to be difficult, overly-complicated and unfair. They should be quite the opposite and a key part of your next deal. The goal of every good term sheet should be to ensure a fair deal, provide certain safeguards and protections, set up healthy returns, and be clearly understood by all parties involved.
An In-Depth Look at Term Sheets takes the mystery out of the process of constructing a term sheet. This workshop explores the common concepts, principles, approaches to and types of term sheets. You will learn what works and what does not as well as the options there are to execute a good deal for everyone. This interactive workshop includes energetic presentations, panel discussions, group exercises and case studies and is taught by the Angel Resource Institute’s renowned faculty of certified lead instructors. Each lead instructor has at least 10 years or more of angel in vesting experience, leading early stage companies and managing angel investment groups.
Like all of ARI’s programs, the content of this workshop is based on the experiences and best practices of the Angel Capital Association’s (ACA) 190 member groups that represent approximately 9,000 individual investors. Program attendees should have the confidence that ARI’s program content is vetted and solid.
Who Should Attend:
Angel Investors will have increased confidence in their deals and better protected interests. They will also be better positioned for ensuring that an exit and/or follow-on funding will take place with greater efficiency.
Entrepreneurs will understand the concepts and principles of how to execute a term sheet and therefore can focus more attention on their business. They will also increase their chance of receiving funding.
Startup Support Professionals will increase the value of their services to clients and constituencies when they can more effectively advise them on to execute the angel investment process. The more knowledge you can transfer the better positioned for success your clients will be.
About the Presenter:
Bill Payne is an active angel investor, board member, and advisor to entrepreneurs. He assisted in founding four angel groups: the Frontier Angel Fund (2006), Vegas Valley Angels (2003), Tech Coast Angels (San Diego – 2000) and Aztec Venture Network (1999). Over the course of three decades, Bill Payne has successfully founded or invested in over 50 start-up companies.
From 1995 to 2007, in his role with as an Entrepreneur in Residence with the Kauffman Foundation (Kansas City), Bill worked on educational programs for entrepreneurs and their investors, including the development of the Power of Angel Investing seminar series. Since 2001, Bill has served as the lead instructor for over 100 of these angel investing seminars and workshops. He has also been actively engaged in the formation and startup of the Angel Capital Education Foundation and the Angel Capital Association (ACA). Bill was awarded ACA’s prestigious 2009 Hans Severiens Memorial Award for Outstanding Contribution to Angel Investing.
Bill graduated with BS and MS degrees in Ceramic Engineering from the University of Illinois, where he has also served on the Dean’s Board of Visitors of the College of Engineering. Bill has over 20 years of experience in Board service for private companies and not-for-profit organizations. He currently serves as advisor to several start-up companies.
