The San Diego Telecom Council presents…
The Vision and the Reality of Internet Protocol Telephony
  “Headliners”   November 6 , 2002
“Voice-over-IP, Who Cares?” or “Can I do more with this than make free long-distance phone calls?”  There are major forces behind the conversion of circuit-switching world of legacy voice networks to Internet Protocol-based voice services, commonly called Voice-over-IP, or VoIP. When the concept of VoIP first emerged, it represented a revolution in the way long distance telephone calls could be conducted.   Using the Internet or a corporate local or wide area network, calls travel as packets of data on shared lines, avoiding the tolls of the PSTN. The challenge in VoIP is to deliver the voice, fax, or video packets in a dependable flow to the user. The benefit is reduced operating costs.  The drivers behind the roll-out of VoIP include: reduced capital expenditure requirement to build such systems; significantly lower cost of operating such networks; and introduction of new services that leverage the power of  Internet. We are going to examine these drivers in more detail along with the following discussion topics:  –         What are the drivers for change? Who really is driving the change to VoIP?  –         What are the biggest barriers to deployment of VoIP on a pervasive basis?  –         What are the fundamental technical issues that need to be overcome before VoIP can be deployed extensively?  –         What are the benefits to the end customer?  –         How about the legacy network? How do you bridge the legacy network to the VoIP network?  Moderator: Naser Partovi, Enterprise Partners  Panelists: Bob Young, SAIC. Bob is Senior Vice President and Manager of the Global Telecommunications Group.   Mr. Young is also responsible for leading the corporation’s Next Generation Information Networks (NGIN) global strategy. Bob is the Chairman of ANX AP and is active on the Board of Directors for SAIC Ltd.
