TiE South Coast: “The Impact of Genomics on Personalized Healthcare”
March 25, 2014
Event Overview:
The related topics of genomics and personalized healthcare are very much in the news today. Recently, the “thousand dollar genome” was announced, where individuals will soon be able to decipher their own genetic code for the price of an annual cell phone subscription. The potential to collect this detailed information raises intriguing questions for healthcare consumers:
• Should I sequence my genome?
• How will genetic information change the treatment of disease?
• What kinds of disease treatments currently benefit from genetic testing?
• How does genomic information impact the development and discovery of new drugs?
• Can genetics help guide lifestyle changes to prevent disease?
• What is the potential for misuse of this information?
The evening will feature a lively discussion on current and future uses of personal genetic codes to guide healthcare decisions and to develop personalized medicine and therapeutics. Our expert panelists have a wide range of backgrounds and perspectives on this fascinating subject.
