As one of the most successful segments in M2M, connected vehicles are making a difference in people’s lives today & will bring dramatic changes to how drivers interact with their cars in the future.  For many years OnStar customers have found their lost cars & unlocked their doors using Connected-Car technology.  Now, more and more vehicles provide a feature-rich offering of safety, convenience, and infotainment capabilities.  As with most M2M segments, there’s a long list of technical challenges to handle connection-technology, vehicle-integration, and automotive ruggedness.  Meanwhile, business dynamics are continually evolving with carmakers, traditional carriers, specialized service providers, and application developers all playing key roles in a diverse ecosystem.As usual, the M2M SIG has assembled an industry-leading panel of Connected-Car experts to provide valuable insight into the opportunities & challenges of the Connected-Car landscape.

Steve Cotter
SVP, Sales and Business Development, Slacker Radio

Steve joined Slacker just prior to Slacker’s brand launch in 2007 as SVP, Sales and Business Development and is responsible for all business development, partner acquisition, and application distribution.  Steve has extensive experience in sales and business development with commercial and consumer technology companies having served as Senior Vice President of OEM Sales, Business Development and Strategic Alliances for Altec Lansing, Vice President of Sales with divisions of SONICblue and Diamond Multimedia, and sales management roles at Seagate Technology and Connor Peripherals.  Steve started his career in various engineering and sales roles in the disk drive component industry and holds a Bachelor of Science degree from the Ohio State University.Evan Jones
Vice President, M2M System Engineering, Sierra Wireless

In the burgeoning field of M2M communications, Evan Jones leads the global technical team driving the adoption and integration of Sierra Wireless embedded solutions into M2M customer products. Evan brings more than 26 years of experience in engineering and wireless systems to his position of Vice President of M2M System Engineering for Sierra Wireless.  Earlier, he was instrumental in realizing Sierra Wireless’ first 3G and 4G products, directing a cross-functional engineering team in development of products launched with leading operators & OEMs. Evan’s prior career achievements include establishing the CDMA engineering program for Philips Semiconductor (formerly VLSI Technology), defining product requirements and architecture, and building a team of over 100 engineers. He also contributed heavily towards the development of Motorola’s large-scale digital trunking radio systems and base station products, directing a 50-person engineering operation.  Evan holds an MSEE specializing in Digital Signal Processing from the Illinois Institute of Technology, and a BSEE with an emphasis in Computer Engineering from Michigan State University.Cindy Patterson
Executive Vice President – Worldwide Sales, Jasper Wireless

Cindy is responsible for global sales and business development for Jasper Wireless.  Jasper is the leader in Machine-to-Machine and Connected Device platforms, used by 12 mobile operator groups, representing 91 operating companies such as AT&T, Telefónica, America Móvil and NTT DoCoMo; and over 600 device manufacturers including General Motors, Nissan, Ford, Amazon, Garmin and Honeywell.  Prior to Jasper, Cindy built and led the Enterprise Data direct and indirect sales channels at Verizon Wireless serving Fortune 1000, Global 500 and Federal Government customers.

Steve Pazol is vice president and entrepreneur in residence at Qualcomm, where he looks at new business opportunities and tries to bring just the right level of disruption to others. Most recently, Steve was the president of nPhase, a Verizon Wireless / Qualcomm joint venture, where he directed all aspects of the company’s operations, strategic development and execution. nPhase provides a cloud-based machine-to-machine (M2M) wireless platform across a wide variety of market segments, including healthcare, manufacturing, utilities, distribution and consumer products. A recognized thought leader and industry expert, Steve has received numerous awards, including the prestigious Chicago Innovation Award, was named one of the original 10 M2M Pioneers by M2M Magazine, and served as moderator of the first M2M web log M2Mblog (www.M2Mblog.com). He has written numerous articles in technology journals, was on the Advisory Board of M2M Magazine, was the technical editor of the Unicenter Advisor magazine for more than 7 years as well as guest editor of Internet Security Advisor. He is also the technical editor and co-author of Unicenter TNG for Dummies. A frequent speaker at industry conferences, Steve has also been a featured speaker and panel member at multiple Wharton School of Business, University of Chicago Graduate School of Business and Northwestern Business School entrepreneurial classes.

Prior to running the nPhase joint venture, Steve was vice president and general manager for Qualcomm’s Global Smart Services group, the business unit that provided the basis for the nPhase joint venture. During his tenure at Qualcomm, Steve also served as vice president of sales and as vice president of Worldwide OEM Channel Business for Qualcomm Enterprise Services.  Steve is a seasoned entrepreneur and CEO with a 20+ year track record of successful startups in technology and emerging markets, including M2M, enterprise software and wireless technologies. In 2003 Steve started the original nPhase in Chicago, and served as CEO until Qualcomm acquired nPhase in 2006. In 2005, Steve founded Skychain LLC, a joint venture between nPhase and Air Products and Chemicals which focused on automated supply chain replenishment in the chemical industry. Steve was CEO of Skychain until 2006 when nPhase was acquired by Qualcomm.

Prior to founding nPhase, Steve spent 15 years providing IT consulting and systems implementation services as President of Professional Consulting Services (PCS) which he started in 1988. He also cofounded Mehta & Pazol Consulting Services Pvt. Ltd. in Pune, India in 1992. Prior to founding PCS, Steve worked for Burroughs Corporation and Unisys Corporation in their consulting groups in Detroit and Chicago. Steve has been active with a number of civic organizations and is currently on the board of the San Diego chapter of the Arthritis Foundation. Steve has a degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the University of Michigan.
