Unmanned Vehicles: An Opportunity Driven by Communications and Information Technology

August 30, 2012

The Military SIG Presents…

Spawar

The emergence of the use of unmanned vehicles by the US military in the recent conflicts in the mid-east has dramatically expanded the public awareness and interest in these systems as well as the funding for research, development and application of these systems in the air, on land and sea as well as beneath the surface at sea. The San Diego region has become one of the domestic leaders in this arena, led by the US Navy’s SPAWAR System Center Pacific (SSC-Pacific) and General Atomics and Northrup-Grumman, suppliers of the most recognized unmanned air vehicles, the Predator and the Global Hawk respectively. The application isn’t, however, limited to the military or even homeland security; there are surveillance applications in agriculture and even domestic chore applications. The viability of these applications is being driven by the dramatic technology advancements in information technology providing smaller, more powerful computational devices at lower costs which is enabling many of the emerging applications. A vital element in their viability is, however, communications. How can the device be controlled and how can the control be assured. A look forward also indicates that the control will not be one-to-one but will frequently me one-to—many and, eventually will integrate vehicle to vehicle communication to enable cooperation.

CommNexus, recognizing that it’s membership is vitally involved in both the communications and information technology markets, is planning a series of SIG events addressing this topic. The initial event in this series will be hosted by SSC-Pacific on August 30th on their facilities Top-Side. It has been scheduled for August 30th where the key members of their team will display and many of their prototypes, demonstrate a few and discuss the projects and plans, identifying challenges and their aspirations. We are planning to follow this initial event by one or two tours of their facilities which will be by invitation only and, subsequently will be holding events on the various types of vehicles and their applications at commercial facilities around the region.
