XYZ: Communication Through the Generations

Traditionalist, Boomer, Xer, Yer and Millennial – which are you? We all know our own generation, but do you know how to communicate with, motivate and manage (or parent) other generations? For the first time in history we have four generations in the workplace and each has its unique perspective, values and goals. There are employees who have never “rolled down” a car window but have grown up with the internet and instant messaging. In a high-tech society where change happens over night and where each generation seems to speak a different language, the concept of generational disconnect is becoming even more of a reality. How, as business professionals, managers, employees, and parents, do we effectively communicate with each generation when they seem to speak different languages?
In a special keynote presentation on communication through the generations, Arlene Lieberman, Principal with Barney & Barney, a local full-service insurance agency, shares her observations on the differences between generations and how they affect our working relationships. You will definitely learn something about yourself and proven approaches for interfacing with today’s generationally diverse workforce.

Arlene Lieberman joined Barney & Barney in 1997 and became a Principal in the Employee Benefits Department in 2002. She is a Practice Group Leader and a member of Barney & Barney’s board of directors, which is made up of senior leadership and has responsibility for overall governance matters and setting strategic direction for the firm.Arlene has dedicated over 30 years to the insurance industry and is responsible for the development and design of employee benefit packages for large national and international employer groups. She works closely with her clients in establishing strategic short and long term objectives to control benefit costs. She has implemented numerous Consumer Driven models supported by Health and Productivity Wellness Programs to support this strategy. As an expert on insurance legislation and regulations, she is an aggressive advocate on behalf of her clients.
Arlene is a member of the Barney & Barney Foundation board of directors and the 2009, 2010 and 2011 Chairperson of the Barney & Barney Foundation “Rock the Foundation” fundraising event. She is also a 2007 recipient of the San Diego Business Journal’s “Women Who Mean Business” award. Arlene holds a Master of Science degree in education. She also has the distinguished designation of Registered Health Underwriter (RHU) which demonstrates her commitment to the employee benefits.

Suzanne Zoumaras is the Vice President, Global Human Resources for Entropic Communications, Inc., a public, San Diego-based, fabless semiconductor company that designs, develops and markets system solutions to enable connected home networking and entertainment. As an “executive” generalist, Suzanne is responsible for development and realization of Entropic’s global human capital strategies and programs. Prior to joining Entropic, Suzanne was Vice President, Worldwide Human Resources for Biosite Incorporated, a medical device company sold to Alere, Inc. and held management positions at Ensemble Communications, Conexant Systems and Cadence Design Systems. Suzanne earned her bachelor’s degree in Business Administration at San Diego State University, is an instructor in the HR Certification programs at SDSU and UCSD and is a regular speaker on strategic human resources, talent acquisition and employee engagement.
