The Digital Media SIG Presents…
Consumer video is approaching a transition from current High Definition to Ultra High Definition TV (UltraHD) also called 4K/8K or Super Hi-Vision. The promise of UltraHD includes more than just increased pixel count and higher resolution but greater realism through wider color gamut space, greater bit-depth, higher frame rate. This transition will impact all aspects of the video ecosystem from content capture/generation, encoding, distribution, decoding, and display. Recent standards have defined elements for interoperation of UltraHD equipment. Display resolution, frame rate, chroma calculations, bit depth and color space for UltraHD are specified via ITU-R Recommendation BT.2020 (Rec. 2020 ). Supporting compression has been defined in the MPEG-HEVC/H.265 standard’s main 10 profile. NHK conducted an successful proof of concept streaming Super Hi-Vision video of the London Olympics. With a variety of product announcements pieces of the ecosystem are ripe to converge. These elements lay the technical foundations, opening the door to the challenges and opportunity of UltraHD.
Many questions arise. What is the status of UltraHD ecosystem development in various areas: content, encoding, distribution, decoding, display? How will the market respond to the adoption of the UltraHD ecosystem? What are the current challenges with UltraHD deployment? What opportunities does this improved realism of UltraHD offer? What are the bandwidth requirements for system operators to deploy UltraHD? How long will it take to transition from today’s HD to tomorrow’s UltraHD?
Please join our experts representing different segments of the UltraHD ecosystem to discuss these and other important questions.
