The events of September 11 have changed the way we live and work.  Never before has our national security appeared more vulnerable.  As Vice Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff during the first Clinton administration, Admiral Bill Owens has seen the challenges facing the U.S. military firsthand.  Instead of spending trillions of dollars to update obsolete weapons systems, he has long argued the Department of Defense should take advantage of recent advances in computing, communications and satellite technology to bring our military into the Information Age.  Widely recognized for bringing commercial high technology to military applications, Owens was the architect of the Revolution in Military Affairs (RMA), an advanced systems technology approach that continues to transform the way America wages war — bringing about a smaller, stronger and more flexible military better able to securely communicate, monitor enemy forces in real time and strike with the full force of American firepower when required.  He understands the importance of getting the right commercial technologies into the hands of trained operators in the field.  Come and join us as we talk with Admiral Owens and a panel of experts who will expand on how early-stage technology companies can work more effectively with the US Government as a customer, source and license new technologies that have been developed by the U.S. Military, and find channels of funding that may be available through DOD initiatives.

Meet the Headliners:

Keynote Speaker:Admiral Bill Owens USN (Ret.), Co-CEO and Vice Chairman, Teledesic, LLC, former Vice Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff commanded the U.S. 6th Fleet during the Persian Gulf War and served as Vice Chairman of the Joint Chief of Staff in 1994-1995.  His book, Lifting the Fog of War offers both an insider’s account of today’s armed forces and a blueprint for a more effective and affordable military tomorrow.  He is currently Vice Chairman and Co-CEO of Teledesic, a global, broadband Internet-in-the-Sky network using advanced satellite technology.  Previously, he was President, Chief Operating Officer and Vice Chairman of SAIC, the nation’s largest employee-owned high technology company.

Moderator: Ted Alexander, General Partner, Mission Ventures, an early stage venture capital fund focused on technology investments throughout southern California.  Prior to joining Mission Ventures, Ted worked in business development for Sandpiper Networks, which was subsequently acquired by Digital Island.  Previously, Ted was a Platoon Commander in the US Navy SEALs, and a Division Officer aboard a US Navy destroyer.  He currently sits on the Board of Entropia, Zyray Wireless and TelASIC.

Panelists:Rear Admiral Tom S. Fellin, Vice Commander, SPAWAR Systems Command, one of the leading developers of information technology and space systems for both the Navy and Defense Department today.  Prior to joining SPAWAR, Rear Admiral Fellin commanded the Navy’s only permanently forward deployed aircraft carrier, USS INDEPENDENCE (CV 62), from 1996 to 1997.  He also commanded the USS CLEVELAND (LPD 7), an amphibious warship, and an A-6 Intruder All Weather Attack Squadron, VA 196, and most recently served as Commander, U.S. Naval Forces, Marianas from 1999 to 2001.

Dr. Christopher H. Morton, Entrepreneur in Residence, MILCOM Technologies.  MILCOM is a leader in commercializing technologies that originate primarily in the defense industry.  Dr. Morton has 23 years of corporate and entrepreneurial leadership experience in virtually every aspect of the advanced communications infrastructure industry.  Prior to joining MILCOM, Dr. Morton was Chief Strategy Officer for Timplex, a provider of wireline telecom products, and managed network solutions.  He previously served as President of Allen Telecom Systems, and prior to Allen, he founded and served as CEO for Navesink Communications, a communications company aimed at providing efficient access transport products and subsystems to cellular and Internet service providers.

Vice Admiral Walter J. Davis Jr. USN (Ret.), having held battlefield commands and the flag officer position as head of N6 at the Pentagon leading Space, Information Warfare, Command & Control, Admiral Davis was directly involved with the Navy’s technology transfer for numerous years.  Additionally, he held the position of CIO for the US Navy, served as Commander, Carrier Group 6 and Commanding Officer USS Ranger (aircraft carrier).  He has also co-founded a technology company outside of the Navy and has spent several years working for beltway company, GDE Systems.

Dr. Ron Reedy, Co-Founder, CTO and General Manager, US Government Group, Peregrine Semiconductor Corp. Dr. Ron Reedy has more than 20 years experience in semiconductor research and development. Previously, he was the branch head of the microelectronics division at Navy Research and Development (NRaD). Dr. Reedy will provide a perspective as a panelist that has operated both inside and outside the “military gate.”  BSEE USNA MSEE Naval Post Graduate School Ph.D. from UCSD.
