Executive Chairman and Co-Founder, CleanTECH San Diego
James Waring is the executive chairman of CleanTECH San Diego. Prior to co-founding CleanTECH San Diego in 2007, Waring worked for Mayor Jerry Sanders and the City of San Diego as deputy chief operating officer for land use and economic development. In 2012, Waring was appointed to the California Transportation Commission by California Governor Jerry Brown. He is also a commissioner for the San Diego Housing Commission. Waring was a practicing attorney for over 20 years, and has been a principal since 1991 at the real estate investment firm, FI Financial. He received a bachelor’s degree in business administration from the University of Southern California and a juris doctorate degree and a master’s degree in Peace and Justice Studies from the University of San Diego.
CEO, General MicroGrids, Inc.
Terry Mohn is CEO of General MicroGrids, Inc. with offices in San Diego, Miami, Washington DC, Nairobi Kenya and Kampala Uganda. The company is a portfolio development company that engineers, builds and operates clean and renewable electric energy systems for rural and industrial communities. He is also Managing Partner at CleanSource Energy Partners, LLC, an international energy company that delivers large, renewable energy to global markets. Terry is also Project Director for the Global Microgrid Center (a non-profit organization), which is a test and certification, R&D and innovation facility focused on advancing microgrid supplier capabilities to address the changing energy market. Terry has 30 years’ experience in large-scale system strategy and design. He was previously VP Innovation of BAE Systems energy business and Chief Technology Strategist for the Sempra Energy utilities. He served two terms as Vice Chairman of the GridWise Alliance. The Dept of Commerce appointed Terry for a three year term to its Smart Grid Federal Advisory Committee. In addition, Terry is a current advisor to the DOE and California Energy Commission for research and emerging technologies. He is also serves as United Nations Foundation MicroGrid Work Group Chairman. Prior to his energy roles, Terry was chief technology officer for an international broadband media company and founder of two Internet companies.
Sr. Director, Global Market Development, Qualcomm
Before joining Qualcomm, Kiva ran a start up focused on delivering high quality headphones and hearing devices to special needs children and adults. Prior to the start up Kiva held executive positions at Motorola and GE. Most recently she was the General Manager for NA Retail and MVNO Sales at Motorola’s Handset Division in Chicago, Illinois. Prior to this role she held executive management roles in Global Product Marketing and Operations. Prior to joining Motorola in 2003, Kiva held several leadership roles within GE Consumer Products. Most notably as a certified Master Black Belt and as a Global Marketing and Product Manager. Kiva has held board seats on the Chicago North County United Way, Tri Delta Sorority, GE Women’s Council, Motorola Women’s Council, Project Six by Six, TVIA and several other regional programs and activities. Kiva holds a Bachelor of Science in Communication Studies from Northwester University and an MBA from Kellogg. She lives in San Diego, CA with her husband Dwight and two sons. She is an avid skier, sailor, and loves to read.
Director of Development, Black & Veatch
Rick Azer is Director of Development for Black & Veatch’s Smart Integrated Infrastructure Group. Black & Veatch is an employee-owned, global leader in building Critical Human Infrastructure in Energy, Water, Telecommunications and Government Services. The Smart Integrated Infrastructure Group focuses on the convergence of physical infrastructure, communications and data analytics to extend the value proposition for technical infrastructure projects across a wide array of clients and industries. Rick’s role is to identify new trends, establish solution architecture, support ecosystem development, and system integration capability to successfully bring these programs to market. Rick joined the company in 2012 as a founding member of the Smart Integrated Infrastructure initiative. Prior to Black & Veatch, Rick was a Sr. Network Expert at Computer Science Corporation focused on communication networks to support Utility Smart Grid functionality. Rick also worked for several years at Qualcomm as a Sr. Director of Operations and led a number of infrastructure deployments for the company. One of his current projects is leading a group designing and constructing Tesla Motor’s network of Superchargers across North America. Rick received his Master of Business Administration from Washington University in St. Louis. He also has a Master’s of Architecture and a Bachelor of Science in Design. Rick is passionate about bringing technology into the built environment. He has 25 years of experience delivering solutions for emerging technologies, including new product offerings for telecommunication, media, energy and petrochemical industries.

Dr. Gary J. Hawkins is a Solution Lead – Smart Technologies within Black & Veatch’s Smart Integrated Infrastructure Group. Black & Veatch, which had 2013 revenues of US $3.6 billion, is an employee-owned, global leader in building Critical Human Infrastructure in Energy, Water, Telecommunications and Government Services. The Smart Integrated Infrastructure Group brings end-to-end smart technologies (including such items as devices, sensors, edge processing, Information and Communications Technologies, Big Data, Big Math, analytics and control) to bear within traditional infrastructure projects. During his time working in San Diego, Gary has been Chief Technical Officer for Celergy Networks, Vice President of Product Management (Infrastructure) for NextWave Wireless, Director of Product Marketing with Littlefeet Inc., and also owns a fitness training company called Ride Fit. Prior to this Gary held senior management positions with LCC International and Orange PCS, UK. Dr. Hawkins received his Ph.D. in Satellite Communications from the University of Bristol, England. Gary is recognized as a Chartered Engineer by the Institution of Engineering and Technology, UK.
