GLOBALFOUNDRIES (GF) latest strategic partnership announcement builds upon an existing relationship with United States DoD, ensuring the manufacturing of a “secure and reliable supply of semiconductor solutions” at the company’s most advanced semiconductor manufacturing facility in Malta, New York.
The first chips produced under the agreement are projected to begin delivery in 2023 and will be used in some of the DoD’s most sensitive land, air, space, and sea applications. As a leader in SOI (silicon-on-insulator) technologies, the partnership between GF and DoD will continue to impact the global 5G ecosystem as the growing demand for U.S. made, advanced semiconductor chips is met.
GF and French semiconductor materials producer, Soitec, share a multi-year supply agreement for the 300mm radio frequency silicon-on-insulator (RF-SOI) wafers used in smartphones and other next-gen wireless devices. The volume of smartphones and other devices on the market that use GF silicon would not be sustainable as the need for 5G solutions continues to grow without the critical supply of wafers from partner Soitec.
Additionally, GF has partnered with California’s largest non-profit startup incubator, EvoNexus, to accelerate the growth and commercialization of semiconductor startups developing breakthrough products in wireless and IoT technologies.
